The defendant, a violent and disturbed homeless man, robbed and murdered Alexis Welch, a former member of the Rockettes, in the early morning as she walked her dogs on the upper west side of Manhattan. ... The case was front page new throughout the New York metropolitan area, and was seen as illustrating the rise of senseless violent crimes committed by the homeless living on the streets of New York. The defendant was represented by William Kuntsler and Ronald Kuby, and the trial was covered by the Court TV network and has been broadcast numerous times. McKiever's conviction and the sentence of 25 years to life in prison were upheld on appeal. People v. Kevin McKiever, 246 A.D.2d 363, 666 N.Y.S.2d 417 (1st Dept. 1998).
