Charisma R. v. Kristina S.
Feb 01, 2010OUTCOME: Parental rights granted
Charisma and Kristina were in a committed relationship for 6 years, and had a baby in 2003. Kristina, the birth mother, left Charisma when their baby was only a few months old. She would't allow Char ... isma to see their daughter or admit that Charisma was a parent at all. The Family Court wrongly agreed with Karina and found that Charisma was not a parent. Charisma appealed and the Court determined that the same-sex partner of a non-biological mother can be a parent under California law. When the case was sent back to the trial court, the Family Court determined that Charisma was indeed the child's legal parent. Ms. Catt served as co-counsel in achieving this ruling in the Family Court, and obtained orders that helped Charisma rebuild her relationship with her daughter. http://www.nclrights.org/?s=charisma&post_type=cases-advocacy
