LaQunya Baker is member of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar, and before opening her firm, Baker Simpson Law LLC, she practiced in the First Judicial District as a Deputy State Public Defender. As a public defender, LaQunya handled hundreds of criminal cases to include misdemeanor, traffic, and felony cases. In addition to general district and county court criminal cases, LaQunya was also a defense attorney in the Jefferson County Specialty Courts, which include, Recovery Court, Veteran’s Court, and Mental Health Court. LaQunya directly worked with the Recovery Court program on a weekly basis to represent clients who were struggling and recovering from drug addiction. LaQunya is a trial attorney at heart having tried several jury trials in the state of Colorado, and has attended dozens of state sponsored trainings on the art of oral advocacy and trial practice.
In addition to criminal defense, LaQunya also fights for employees who have been discriminated in the workplace because of their race, gender, disability, or age. LaQunya has litigated employment discrimination cases at the Federal level in Virigina, Colorado, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
Prior to practicing law in Colorado, LaQunya participated in judicial clerkships in both D.C. Superior Court (2014) and the United States District Court, District of South Carolina (2014). In addition to her Juris Doctorate, LaQunya has a Bachelor’s in Communication with a concentration in writing for the mass media (2013). LaQunya is a member of the Community Outreach Committee for the Irving Andrews Inn of Court as well as a member of the Colorado Black Women for Political Action.
LaQunya has a passion for international travel and international human rights. She was born on a U.S. Army base outside of Frankfurt, Germany and later studied international business law and comparative constitutional law at Justus-Liebig Law School in Giessen, Germany (2015). Additionally, LaQunya has studied the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade at the University of West Indies in Barbados (2012) and has completed an independent cultural study in Nairobi, Kenya (2010).
