Ms. Villarruel obtained her Juris Doctor at Valparaiso University School of Law and also holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of the Incarnate Word. During law school, Ms. Villarruel worked as a law clerk for a personal injury firm.
Immediately after acquiring her licensure, Ms. Villarruel began working with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney investigating and prosecuting criminal cases ranging from Operating While Intoxicated to Murder. Ms. Villarruel was soon promoted to Assistant Supervisor, a position in which she was responsible for overseeing and training new deputy prosecutors.
Ms. Villarruel also played an integral part in the prosecution of David Bowen. The case (David Bowen v. State of Indiana) resulted in Bowen receiving a 50-year prison term for the violent murder of a young Indiana boy in 1979.
Outside of the office, Ms. Villarruel is an avid animal rights activists and regularly volunteers for the Ian Somerhalder Foundation and various animal shelters.
