Matthew Ryan Nesmith

My practice focuses primarily on patent procurement, but I have also counseled clients regarding intellectual property matters related to their products and services and represented clients in adversarial proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in litigation at the trial and appellate levels. I’ve been fortunate in that this practice has exposed me to a wide variety of technologies, including mobile device hardware and software, communications technologies, oilfield tools, and medical devices.

Prior to practicing intellectual property law, and after receiving a degree in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University in 2004, I worked as an instrument and automation engineer in the automation and control division at Mustang Engineering (now Wood Group Mustang). During my time at Mustang, I was exposed to many aspects of chemical process automation projects, including control system (PLC and DCS) configuration, instrumentation, process mechanical upgrades, and process safety.  While working at Mustang, I attended law school at the University of Houston Law Center in the evenings, and I completed law school in 2010.

I truly enjoyed my time working as an engineer, and I am thankful that the practice of intellectual property law allows me to utilize my technical training and experience. I feel very fortunate to practice in this area of the law’s intersection with technology, and I look forward to expanding my practice in the areas of my technical experience in process control and process safety.
