If you are out of status, you can not adjust your status unless you are grandfathered for 245i.

USCIS has 15 calender days to adjudicate the case. If USCIS issue a RFE, it probably takes over 2 weeks to receive the decision.

Once you filed the AOS application, you can't use your J-1 visa to reenter the U.S. You have to have a valid advanced parole document.
