He attended the University of Texas at Austin on an academic scholarship. He was chosen as the Outstanding Military Science student from the University of Texas. As a Distinguished Military Graduate of the University of Texas, he was selected by the United States Army for an elite program to attend the University of Texas School of Law, one of the largest and premier law schools in the country, while on active military duty. While there he was awarded an American Jurisprudence Award for being a top student.
He is also a graduate of the Army Law School at the University of Virginia, and studied for a Master of Laws degree at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. while there as an appellate attorney for the United States Army. He is also a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College.
While on active duty in the Washington D.C. area, Kris was chosen from many Military Appellate Attorneys to be the Editor In Chief of the Army's Criminal Law Journal, The Advocate. He also served as the United States Army's Regional Defense Counsel for Southwest United States and Panama.
After leaving active duty in 1980, he relocated to Longview and was the Senior Trial Attorney, then the Managing Attorney for the Legal Aid Office for several years. In 1983 he moved to the Law Firm of Adams, Sheppard & King where he was chosen to be the Managing Attorney. He served as an alternate Municipal Judge for almost 15 years.
He grew up working on his family's ranch and farms throughout the great plains from the Texas Panhandle to Wyoming.
