Shelby Don Hart

I retained Shelby and his team in late November after six weeks of research regarding divorce and divorce lawyers. I knew my divorce was going to be difficult/high-conflict before I began, and I had very specific goals entering into the process. I needed a lawyer who would listen, who would understan...d why I wanted what I wanted, and who wouldn't fold (or let me fold, to the detriment of myself and my children) under pressure. I don't think I could have done better than hiring Shelby Hart. He was extremely flexible with my initial consultation--my schedule was a bit of a challenge--and he paid attention to what I said and didn't say. His questions were insightful, compassionate, and meant to elicit a clear picture of the reality of my marriage. He answered all the questions I had for him with solid, well-considered answers, and he was honest about the probability of achieving the things I wanted (primary custody, my full retirement, exclusive rights to important decisions, child support and medical insurance reimbursements for my children). Honesty cannot be overvalued, and Shelby is beautifully honest. Once I retained him, he and his team had the Petition for Divorce ready for review within a few days, and they filed it with the Court a few days after that. He knew the judges in the county in which I petitioned for divorce, and he was pleased with the judge for my case. His team was extremely helpful in regard to how to fill out the paperwork (there is A LOT of paperwork) and answered any questions I had promptly. Shelby was in and out of Court during the month I was completing the paperwork; the communication between him and his team was impressive. He answered the questions I had that required his expertise, and his team handled the others. This ultimately saved money and time. There were never any surprises with the bills, and the itemized financial records they kept helped me realize how much work the divorce was actually taking (it's so much more than I thought, and it's all necessary). Shelby arranged a very specific mediator three months in advance because she was the best for my case (and she was). I had asked him in the preparation meeting not to let me agree to things that would put me at a disadvantage or return me to what I left, and I think the moment I knew, absolutely, that things would be all right was when the mediator said that my now-ex-husband wasn't going to bend on something I had told Shelby I absolutely did not want to compromise on, and Shelby said, "Tell him that is off the table. We are not negotiating on that. If he wants to negotiate, we can go to court, and he can take his chances there." The concern wasn't mentioned again. Shelby took me, my experiences, and my concerns seriously. The situation surrounding my divorce was volatile, delicate, and precarious, and Shelby's advice and encouragement helped me navigate the legal aspects of the case while managing the emotional upheaval of my children and my own recovery. It's not easy to balance what is legally possible with what is compassionate and right, and Shelby did so brilliantly. I truly believe that my children and I would not be in the secure, safe position we are today if I hadn't hired Shelby Hart.
