Minaleah Koffron, et al. v Portage Public Schools, et al.
Mar 08, 2024OUTCOME: A consent Judgment entered containing the prohibitions and policy changes sought by the plaintiffs.
The lawsuit alleged that the school system and the named defendants (school administrators) maintained practices that denied Jewish students their right to an equal educational opportunity under the El ... liott-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1976 and their right, under the Michigan Constitution, to freely exercise their religion without coercive pressure. The lawsuit also alleged a systemic failure within the school system to adhere to its own nondiscrimination policy. The lawsuit did not seek punitive damages but, instead, sought policy changes to promote inclusivity and equity within Portage Public Schools for students of minority religions and cultures, and to improve procedural protections afforded to those students.
