Tenatious & Talented

I have worked with Melissa for over 8 years, at times what seemed to me exhausting and endless. She is practical, KNOWS THE LAWS, a powerful fighter for family and children. She is compassionate to sensitive matters, listens attentively, processes, answers questions with a quick turnaround time, an...d remains calm in highly emotional situations. She has a dynamic working relationship within her community; well-known and respected. Melissa and her team are professional, respectful and work collaboratively with each other and their clients. Their communication is constant, and things get done. There were times when giving up would have been easier, but she handled apprehension with grace and strength. Family issues require empathy, patience, and compassion while emotions are volatile. Melissa has demonstrated from the beginning & over the years her abilities, talents and tenacious drive to do what is best and right in difficult situations. She is trustworthy, ethical and committed to finding a resolution, agreement, or final disposition. She motivates and empowers those who feel all hope may be lost or the damage is irreversible. Melissa carves a path to explore options. She takes every step with you until we are able to find our through difficult times.

Thank you for your incredibly kind words! It was a pleasure representing you and I thank you for letting me go on this part of your journey with you. Issues in family law can be difficult legally, emotionally and financially so it is important that you have an attorney you trust who will empower you and who will help you navigate the law where it takes not only an understanding of the written law but an understanding of the other factors that will impact your case.

Child Custody case

Melissa Cornell was my attorney for 4 years. I’m very familiar with her attorney skills and business practices. Everything the anonymous reviewer wrote (March 2017), was true in my case as well. Melissa botched everything from the beginning. She turned simple issues into complicated long-term probl...ems. Weeks, sometimes months would go by, before she would respond to my calls and emails. Monthly bills were outrageously high. Questionably large amounts of time billed for “reviewing” and “drafting”. My case went to trial and Melissa was an epic failure in the courtroom. I was unaware that she failed to file vital documents to protect me, and my child. I lost custody of my child to her abusive father. Melissa had no explanation, no compassion, nothing. She demanded more money and I refused, so she withdrew. Melissa left me, my child, my entire family in a devastating situation. She made over 6 figures from me, and she’s still after more money. 4 months after she withdrew, she billed me $700 for administrative fees? I’ve found countless billing ”mistakes” such as charging me double for her presence at trial, and charging me thousands for her daughter to sit in the courtroom and take notes? I will never use Melissa Cornell again, for anything.

Our firm regrets that you had a bad experience. A lawyer has a duty to maintain all client confidences, so we cannot address your concerns here. While we disagree that your post presents a fair and accurate picture of the events, we would welcome the opportunity to talk with you and go through any of your concerns or questions. Even though our representation ended approximately two (2) years ago, we very much want to do anything we can to clarify any misunderstandings and for us to both learn from this experience. We strive to provide the best outcomes for every client in every case within the confines of the legal system. Again, we welcome the opportunity to meet with you, and wish all the very best things for you. Thank you for giving us an opportunity to address your needs.

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
