Our firm took this case on in 2015 after a client lost their property to tax foreclosure for a nominal sum. The County refused to return the property and then sold it for more than $30,000.00, keeping ... all of the profits. We sued the County for our client to, among other things, obtain the surplus proceeds the County obtained from the sale. The case went all the way to the Michigan Supreme Court where a groundbreaking decision was issued finding that Counties throughout Michigan could not profit from tax foreclosure sales.
