Jacob Guice Longman

Jacob Longman is the Managing Partner and co-founder of Longman Jakuback, the boutique criminal defense firm he opened with Kathryn Jakuback Burke in 2017. In nearly a decade of practice, he has built it into a litigation practice devoted to the most serious matters a client can face, serving clients throughout Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, and the surrounding parishes, and he is admitted in all three of Louisiana’s federal districts. Mr. Longman’s practice concentrates on violent crimes and serious felonies, white-collar and financial fraud, sex offenses, drug offenses, grand jury investigations, and constitutional challenges. He appears regularly before the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of Louisiana, and he maintains an active appellate and post-conviction practice, authoring briefs and pursuing relief and sentence modifications well after the trial record has closed. He came to the law by an indirect route. After earning his undergraduate degree at Louisiana State University in literature and history, Mr. Longman served in the United States military and worked as a law enforcement professional before returning to law school. That background informs how he prepares a case, particularly in evaluating how investigations are conducted, how evidence is gathered, and where the government’s proof may prove vulnerable. During law school, he clerked for the 19th Judicial District Court and worked as an intern and investigator for the East Baton Rouge Office of the Public Defender, conducting field investigations, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing digital forensics in support of defense counsel. Mr. Longman works frequently as co-counsel alongside seasoned litigators, including the firm’s Of Counsel, James E. Boren, on complex trial, evidentiary, and appellate matters. He places particular emphasis on pre-indictment mitigation, engaging early in an investigation while its outcome can still be shaped. He currently serves as President of the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, an organization he has belonged to since 2018 and whose student division he led while in law school. He was named a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation in 2025 and to the National Trial LawyersAssociation’s Top 40 Under 40, and he has been recognized by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in Criminal Defense each year since 2023. He is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Louisiana State Bar Association, and the Criminal Justice Section of the Baton Rouge Bar Association.
