John began private practice in Scottsbluff, Nebraska where he became partner in the firm of Simmons, Olsen, Ediger, Selzer & Ballew P.C. In 1991, John moved back to Lincoln and became associated with Baylor, Evnen, Curtiss, Grimit & Witt. In 1995, John and M.J. Bruckner formed The Bruckner/Ballew Law Firm, P.C. before he and Vic Covalt decided to form this firm in 1999. Although he has practiced extensively in the areas of divorce, bankruptcy, personal injury (plaintiff and defense) and worker's compensation over the past 36 years, John now has concentrated his trial practice in the area of complex and high asset divorce litigation and appellate advocacy. He is one of only eleven lawyers in Nebraska admitted to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and is one of only two lawyers in Nebraska who is both a Fellow in the American Academy and Board Certified as a Family Law Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers In America since 2001. In 2007, he was recognized by SuperLawyers.com as one of the top lawyers in Nebraska. John coached two championship high school mock trial teams while in Scottsbluff. He also received the first Robert M. Spire Pro Bono Award given by the Nebraska Bar Association in 1986 for his efforts in representing low-income clients. He has chaired both the Family Law and Bankruptcy Sections of the Nebraska Bar Association and has been a frequent speaker at continuing education seminars on bankruptcy and divorce. In recent years he has spoken to the Nebraska County and District Court Judges Associations, the Nebraska Trial Lawyers Association and regularly speaks at the Annual Institute on the Survey of Nebraska law concerning recent legislative and case law developments in family law.  On four occasions his work with state senators has resulted in significant changes in Nebraska law concerning divorce,state-funded retirement benefits and bankruptcy. John has appeared before the Nebraska Supreme Court and Nebraska Court of Appeals more than 35 times in connection with appeals in the areas of divorce and family law, products liability, property taxation and personal injury. In his spare time, John enjoys scuba diving, spending time at his cabin in Long Pine, NE, as well as singing and playing guitar in his band The Wheezetones.

Professional advocate
John Ballew was recommended as the best attorney available in the Lincoln area for my divorce. During the lengthy, complicated and often contentious process, Mr. Ballew maintained the highest level of professionalism thru many opportunities to respond to poor conduct. He was consistently calm, well-prepared and empathetic. Mr. Ballew provided succinct advice and clear direction, in the short and long term interests of my children and I. In addition, he is assisted by Sharlyn, a responsive, caring and equally professional advocate. I am grateful for the superior legal representation and advocacy I experienced with John Ballew and his staff.

John Ballew: The bright side in a divorce
Attorney John Ballew leads the way through a very difficult life changing event. Upon completion of the initial paperwork, Atty Ballew is engaged, diligent and devoted to your case. Being prompt in returning your phone calls or emails is essential in a divorce, and Atty Ballew never failed to respond in a timely manner, even if it was your 5th email in one day! You will feel as if YOU are his only client. He will listen patiently as you cry or yell, he is never judgmental or critical of your soon-to-be ex spouses attorney (even if you wish he was). Attorney John Ballew plays fair!
