Normally, it takes some time to investigate. Get a lawyer and don't talk with the cops.

Hard to do, best to get a lawyer in Nebraska and they can work with a lawyer in MI. This will depend on the remaining family in MI.

I would doubt it would be a crime, and it may be an element they have to prove. Have them get a good criminal attorney.
