Patrick B Hughes

Patrick's experience as a law clerk in both the state and federal courts has served him well as an appellate advocate. He has handled appeals in and beyond Kansas on a range of issues including constitutional and first-impression questions. His work has included writing amicus briefs on the question of who owns the wind and arguing the standard for awarding child custody to a non-parent.

Patrick helps business clients with issues involving contracts, employment, government regulation, intellectual property, disputes among owners, and insurance coverage. Industries served by his business practice include medical, natural resources, construction, manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture. Occasionally his practice includes matters outside of the United States and has taken him to Khartoum, Sudan and Istanbul, Turkey and involved FARA registration and OFAC licensing.

Patrick has represented landowners, neighbors, planning commissions, and county governments in all aspects of zoning law, including zoning changes, variances, exceptions, nonconforming uses, interpretation of zoning regulations and appeals. He has also assisted a county in the development and adoption of comprehensive zoning regulations. Patrick has also written about and taught continuing legal education seminars on zoning and land use issues.
