JILL A. MICHAUX has helped thousands individuals and small business proprietors get much needed debt relief in her legal career.

She and Mark W. Neis, are Topeka’s only board certified consumer bankruptcy law specialists.  They are partners in the Bankruptcy Law Office of Neis & Michaux, P.A., Topeka, Kansas.

Since the late 1980s, Jill does consumer bankruptcy work for individual and small business debtors almost exclusively.  She was the first Kansas attorney to be board certified in consumer bankruptcy law by the American Board of Certification and one of ten Kansas attorneys so certified today.  She does not represent institutional creditors.

She advocates for the rights of consumer debtors as a charter member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys. She served on the NACBA board of directors the first seven years and remains active today in committee wor 

Jill is a leader in the local bankruptcy bar.  She is past president of the Kansas Bar Association Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section.  She is a founding member and past president of the Topeka Area Bankruptcy Council.  She frequently is called upon to teach consumer bankruptcy law to other lawyers, locally, across the state and nationally.

She was appointed by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts to serve six years on the U.S. Courts Judicial Council Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Practice and Procedure from 2012 to 2018.

She blogs on consumer bankruptcy and consumer rights and is administrator of bankruptcy listservs.

She served as judge of the Municipal Court of the City of Rossville, Kansas, from 1993 through 2009. She is past president of the Kansas Municipal Judges Association.

A Topeka native, Jill was graduated from the University of Kansas in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree.  She worked as a newspaper reporter the Topeka Capital-Journal and then did public relations work for a trade association before attending Washburn University Law School from which she was graduated with Dean’s Honors in 1982 and named Outstanding Legal Intern.

She has had her own law practice since 1982 initially doing mostly domestic relations, criminal, juvenile, guardianship and mental illness work.  She joined her husband, Mark W. Neis, in law practice in 1984 and formed Neis & Michaux, P.A.

Jill was graduated from Topeka High School in 1973.  She married Mark Neis in 1984.  They have one daughter, Michelle Neis, who is a lawyer for the State of Kansas.
