Military - U.S. Army veteran, having served on active duty and as a member of the Missouri Army National Guard, holding the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7) and the position of Platoon Sergeant with B Co., 110th Engineer Battalion (Cbt) in Kansas City. He holds the following awards: Missouri Commendation Medal (2 awards), Army Commendation Medal, and Army Achievement Medal (4 awards). He is a 1993 graduate of the Small Unit Leader Battle Skills Training Course (Sapper Leader Course) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and served as an instructor for the 1995 course.
