Theodore Samuel Potkonjak

Ted is a seasoned and aggressive litigator with more than 42 years of experience practicing law.

He began his legal career with the Lake County State's Attorney's Office, where he quickly advanced to Division Chief and served as a felony trial attorney in the Career Offenders and Narcotics Unit. During his five years with the office, Ted handled serious criminal matters and gained extensive courtroom experience.

After leaving the State's Attorney's Office, Ted spent 15 years in private practice, primarily representing individuals facing criminal charges. His work included defending major felony cases, misdemeanors, DUI offenses, and traffic matters. During this time, he participated in numerous jury trials, including murder trials. Ted also served as a Special Public Defender for the Lake County Public Defender's Office, where he was appointed to handle complex felony cases.

Following two decades in practice, Ted was appointed to the bench as an Associate Judge in Lake County. He served the community in that role for 22½ years before retiring from the bench in October 2024.

In December 2024, Ted reopened his law office and returned to private practice, once again focusing on criminal defense. In June 2025, he also joined the Chicago law firm of Miroballi Durkin Rudin Lucas and Rosenblum (MDR-Law) as Of Counsel. MDR-Law is a long-established civil litigation firm handling matters such as personal injury, medical malpractice, construction injuries, workers’ compensation, wrongful death, nursing home negligence, and sexual assault claims. Through this affiliation, Ted is able to assist clients with a wider range of legal needs beyond criminal defense.

Ted has also been selected by the 22nd Judicial Circuit in McHenry County to represent criminal defendants when a conflict prevents the McHenry County Public Defender’s Office from providing representation. His appointment reflects the court’s confidence in his background and qualifications in criminal law.

While affiliated with MDR-Law, the primary focus of Ted’s practice remains defending and protecting the rights of individuals facing criminal charges.
