Extremely Disappointing Experience – Poor Communication, Lack of Attention to Detail, and Questionable Billing
I hired Sofia twice: 1st for my uncontested divorce and later for a post-decree child support enforcement matter. Unfortunately, after working with her on 2 separate cases, I cannot recommend her services.
The biggest issue was not one isolated mistake but a consistent pattern of poor communicatio...n, lack of attention to detail, unnecessary delays, and billing concerns. Throughout both cases, I constantly felt that I had to manage my attorney's work instead of being represented by one.
My divorce was expected to take about 3 months but ultimately lasted around 6 months, even though there were no property disputes and both my former husband and I signed and returned every requested document within one or two days. Most delays occurred after everything had already been submitted to my attorney.
For my second case, I signed the retainer agreement, paid the retainer, and immediately emailed Sofia a complete package of documents, including financial records, overnight logs, divorce documents, child support calculations, and detailed written instructions for the petition. Despite receiving everything on the first day, nothing happened for more than a month. I received no confirmation that work had begun and no meaningful updates until I contacted her myself.
Although I had already provided all necessary information in writing, the first draft of the petition contained multiple errors and omitted important requests, including the life insurance provision. I identified these issues myself and requested corrections. Several billed phone calls were later spent discussing information that had already been provided in my emails.
Communication was the most frustrating part of working with this office. Phone calls were rarely answered, text messages generally went unanswered, and email responses often took two or even three weeks. The only reliable way to receive a response was to send repeated follow-up emails. Ironically, when Sofia wanted to speak with me, she would call without scheduling a convenient time first, often while I was at work. I felt obligated to answer because I knew reaching her later would likely be impossible.
I was rarely informed when documents had been filed, when work had been completed, when hearings had been scheduled, or what the next step would be. Nearly every meaningful update required me to initiate communication myself.
After my former husband and I reached our settlement, the final agreement was sent to us only about 25 minutes before the court hearing, leaving almost no time to review an important legal document. This was especially concerning because previous drafts had already required corrections due to errors and omissions. I was also promised a Zoom link for one hearing but never received it.
The billing process raised additional concerns. I had to request my final invoice twice before receiving it. After reviewing it, I questioned several charges. Sofia acknowledged in writing that one billing entry was a clerical error and removed it. She also removed a charge for an initial consultation that took place before I signed any retainer agreement or officially became her client, after I questioned that charge. Even after agreeing to correct the invoice, I had to follow up again before receiving the revised bill.
I respect an attorney's right to be paid for legitimate work. However, clients also deserve timely communication, careful review of the information they provide, accurate legal documents, transparent billing, and proactive case updates.
Looking back, almost every meaningful step in both of my cases happened only after I initiated communication or reminded my attorney to act. Based on my personal experience after two separate legal matters, I would not hire this attorney again. I strongly recommend keeping every communication in writing, saving every email, carefully reviewing every document before signing, and examining every invoice line before making any payment...
