I am a litigator handling a broad range of matters, from civil to family to criminal cases, and at all stages, from investigation to trial to appeal. My original background is in criminal defense and other criminal-related cases (expungements, forfeitures, post-disposition relief, etc.), but as I have continued to practice I have found that handling a wider range of cases makes me a better lawyer at each of them. I am focused on making sure your goals are met, whatever those goals are, and doing so as quickly and inexpensively as possible.
I have represented thousands of people in many kinds of criminal, civil, and family cases, from traffic tickets to homicide, from forfeitures to divorces. I am here to help you solve whatever legal problem you face.
My primary area of practice is civil litigation. I have represented individuals and businesses in wide varieties of claims, from wage-and-hour cases to property damage cases to assault and battery cases to public procurement cases.
I continue to practice in criminal defense and related fields, such as expungement, forfeiture, and criminal appeals. I am passionate about protecting the rights of people who have found themselves involved in the criminal justice system and making sure that system works for you. I have tried and won jury trials for people accused of both felony and misdemeanor offenses and have obtained dismissals and negotiated favorable plea agreements. I am recognized as a statewide leader in criminal expungements, participating in an expungement task force and litigating the first appellate case under Minnesota's revised expungement law, which reached the Minnesota Supreme Court. In short, when you're facing down the State of Minnesota or the United States in the criminal justice system, you don't have to do it alone, and you can rest assured putting your trust in me.
I also practice in family law, covering everything from adoptions and custody cases to divorces and domestic abuse cases. Choosing the right family lawyer can prevent unnecessary conflict and make your case shorter and less expensive, so it is crucial to find one to serve your agenda, not his or her own. I'm committed to helping you decide what your goals should be and to helping you reach them as easily as possible.
Finally, I have handled over two dozen appeals in the last few years, among the most of any private attorney in southeastern Minnesota over that time. They have included divorces, restraining orders, criminal dispositions, criminal expungements, a probate case, and a custody case. Appeals are among the most difficult and time-consuming cases in the legal system, and it's important to act quickly and pick a competent and experienced attorney to have a chance at success.
I was raised in Rochester and went to college and law school at the University of Minnesota. I have forged strong connections throughout this area and practice throughout southeastern Minnesota.
