After receiving his B.A. from the University of Minnesota, Butwinick attended Hamline University School of Law. Here he received his J.D., was an associate on the Hamline Law Review, and was a member of the Moot Court competition team. After his formal education, he continued to pursue an education in injury law by attending numerous local and national seminars.

In 2003 and 2004 he selected for inclusion in the list of Super Lawyers® Rising Stars℠ in political and law magazines.
