The Interpretation of 'Not Much'

My case was won that I hired this attorney for--hard to lose a unemployment case such as mine--I probably didn't need a lawyer, but I had never gone through this kind of situation before. The problem is that when I said "I don't even know how much this is going to cost me.", Mr. Mulligan replied, "Oh..., dont worry, it won't be much." I then assumed it would cost around $500 tops. The whole proceedure was probably no more than 5 hours worth. I did not recieve a quote, I did not receive a proposal, and the bill came well after the case was solved. When I opened the envelope, I found out the winner would definitely be Mr. Mulligan. I was living off of a loan from my a local bank that I have done business with for years until I could possibly receive my back unemployment or get a job.My landlord was an extremely compassionate, trusting, and patient man, because he was waiting for 2 and a half months for his rent, so I wouldn't run out of money from the bank loan. I went on umemployment to begin with because my only client for the company I worked for died. I had no money. The day I opened the envelope from Mr. Mulligan's office, I just about died myself. His "not much" was more than I made in one month. I would hate to see his expensive stuff. The bill was for $1500. Now, if you make $300 an hour, $1500 isn't much. But when you are living on unemployment, even if you are receiving the top amount, $1500 is major and quite impossible to pay along with everyday expenses. My interpretation of "not much" is definitely not what Mr. Mulligan's is.
