A lawyer might get some relief from this. If he doesn't have a lawyer, your son should plead not guilty and see if he can talk to the prosecutor.

I agree with my colleagues but am not offering my services. You can use a lawyer. Turning yourself in is almost always better than being arrested...

Your lawyer should be able to do the paperwork for this. It will take an OK from the judge, though.

You can say no. It is not a crime, and even if it is later changed to be treated as a crime, you were not convicted of a crime.
