Justice Department Settles Sex Discrimination Suit Against Summit County, Ohio
Mar 27, 2013
OUTCOME: Settlement
In July 2012, shortly after the United States joined the lawsuit, Summit County abandoned its sex-segregated job assignment system. Under the terms of the consent decree, Summit County has agreed to ta...ke several steps to ensure that any job assignment system implemented at the Summit County Jail will comply with Title VII and only use sex-based assignments, if at all, to the limited extent that they are reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the jail. To make this determination, the county will conduct a staffing analysis and develop a lawful staffing plan, which it will review regularly during the life of the decree. The county will also provide training on sex discrimination as well as engage in recruitment efforts to encourage qualified female applicants to apply for deputy positions. Finally, the county will pay $400,000 in individual monetary relief to the affected female deputies and to cover their attorney fees.
