Contested Divorce
May 02, 2023OUTCOME: Divorce and Property Distribution Awarded to Ms. Beurmann-O’Neill's Client
Ms. Beurmann-O’Neill represented a Wife in a contested divorce. Husband and Wife had been married for over 20 years and had three adult children. Husband was retired military and was working a full tim ... e technology job on the date of separation. Wife had been a stay at home mother and was just re-entering the work force. Husband was a difficult opposing party who refused to obtain legal counsel and repeatedly rebuffed the court and its orders. Wife moved into a rental home and Husband stayed in the marital home. Husband refused to negotiate a reasonable marital settlement, refused to purchase Wife’s interest or sell the marital residence, and the case went to trial. At trial, Ms. Beurmann-O’Neill was able to put on a strong case on the financial and property aspects of the divorce through witness testimony and documentary evidence. The circuit court awarded Wife a divorce, ordered that the marital portion of Husband’s military retirement be equally divided between the parties, and ordered the marital residence to be sold. Showing its faith in Ms. Beurmann-O’Neill, the court appointed her as a special commissioner to effectuate the sale of the home. Finally, Wife recouped some of the costs she incurred with an award of attorney fees.
