A client came to me for help when the IRS assessed an $805,000 tax liability in Mar 2007 after issuing a $1,446,955 refund in Feb 2007. The assessment arose out of a 4-year family partnership audit. ... The client was looking for help paying the liability but I helped them fight it on the grounds that the assessment was not timely and/or that the IRS could not collect an erroneous refund after the assessment statute had expired and was required to file suit. We fought the case through US Tax Court and finally settled in January 2013 with the IRS agreeing to no tax due and withdrawing all liens. This saved my client over $1.2M in liability with accruals
