The police found items in the car that led to charges for operating a vehicle while under the influence, intoxicated possession o ... f firearms, and possession of marijuana. I worked with my client to understand all of the circumstances as well as any immigration consequences of the criminal charges. I presented my client's history and story along with a thorough explanation of the immigration context of the charges, and I was able to convince the prosecution to dismiss all weapons and drug charges, avoiding automatic immigration consequences for my client.

OUTCOME: Immigration Officer Indicted on Felony Human Trafficking Charge

My client disclosed that her ICE Deportation Officer was been harassing and abusing her. Within two weeks of learning of the abuse, we opened an investigation with the U.S. Attorney's Office, the FBI, ... and the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General's Office. I secured a victim advocate for my client at no cost to help with the interview process. After investigating the allegations, the government found my client's accusations to be credible, and investigators found additional victims. The officer was suspended from his role supervising vulnerable immigrants and is now facing up to life in prison in a federal criminal case. As the key witness in the case, my client was granted Deferred Action to allow her to legally remain in the United States to testify against her abuser.

I work with a lot of people who don't have a Social Security card, and in the State of Ohio, you can't get a license without one. Unfortunately, driving without a license can get you up to 180 days in ... jail, depending on whether you have a prior conviction for No License or if you are in a jurisdiction that carries a possibility of jail time the first time. I regularly work with prosecutors around the Cleveland/Akron Metropolitan Area and explain the situation of my clients. By and large, I have had great success negotiating charges of No License, a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $1,000 and a potential of 180 days jail if previously convicted for driving without a license, to a minor misdemeanor charge punishable by a maximum fine of $150) and use other technicalities to avoid exposure to potential jail time in the future. I have successfully represented clients in dozens of minor traffic cases throughout the area.
