Kathryn is a military brat who grew up at West Point, the United States Military Academy, where her father taught political science. Her grandfather Robert W. Porter, Jr., retired as a 4-Star General and became Virginia's Tree Farmer of the Year, committed to saving critical forests in the Shenandoah Valley of Central Virginia. Now a resident of Traverse City, Kathryn is co-owner of the family's historic Middle River Farm, outside Charlottesville, Virginia.
Kathryn's love of nature and commitment to service brought her to Traverse City to work with Grant. She is passionate about legal advocacy for injured individuals and those whose rights have been violated. Her practice centers on personal injury law as well as civil rights and workplace discrimination cases.
Kathryn received her bachelor's degree in Information Technology (IT) from The College of William & Mary in 2005 with honors. She received her law degree from The University of Michigan Law School in 2010, also with honors. Following graduation, Kathryn clerked for the Honorable Corinne Beckwith on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Kathryn began private practice in Chicago, where she was a commercial litigator in state and federal courts.
In 2016, Kathryn was first honored by inclusion on the Michigan Super Lawyers Rising Stars list. She served on the board of directors of Step Up Chicago, a non-profit organization empowering girls from under-resourced communities. She currently serves on the board of the Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center. Kathryn and her husband, Brian, a Marketing Technology professional, live in the downtown Traverse City area, and enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, chasing sunsets, and supporting local breweries, as well as working on public interest causes.
