The house is responsible for the taxes, not you. But if you're planning to wait 5 years, somebody's got to pay the taxes in the meantime... You?

If you caused damages to the estate, you can be charged for the expenses you caused. Even if that means there's nothing left for you...

Get an appraiser to give you the highest possible (justifiable) value to the house, because when you sell it, you're going to pay capital gain tax...

Medicaid and the VA each have some programs to help pay for the funeral... and don't forget the $225 social security benefit...

My understanding (limited!) is that the lien attaches when your folks applied for MA... not sure how you would save the house at this point......
