Biography
Mr. Hemler currently serves as in-house counsel for The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan, where he specializes in human resources and employment law matters, health and welfare benefit plans, tax-qualified retirement plans, and employee-related issues arising in the context of corporate transactions. Prior to joining Dow, Mr. Hemler served as an attorney at Shearman & Sterling LLP in New York, New York, where he first worked in the Mergers & Acquisitions Group and later in the Executive Compensation & Employee Benefits Group.
Mr. Hemler graduated summa cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He went on to earn a Master of Business Administration, summa cum laude, and a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Detroit Mercy. In law school, Mr. Hemler served as the Editor-in-Chief of the University of Detroit Mercy Law Review and received awards for outstanding academic performance in the areas of legal research and writing, real property, evidence, federal taxation, corporate transactions, and estates and trusts. He was also presented with the Finance Department Award for demonstrating scholastic achievement and exceptional promise as a scholar in the field of finance.
Mr. Hemler is licensed to practice law in Michigan and New York. He currently serves on the Alumni Board of Directors of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. He has been published several times in legal journals and periodicals on the topics of executive compensation, corporate governance, and constitutional law.
