Your case is absoloutely doable and is best to apply for a waiver than spend 2 yrs in your home country if you have dificulties.

First, you have to be selected. Whether to Including him or not is your choice.
I applied for J-1 Waiver and the status says "Department of State Decision: Not Required to Adjudicate".

That means that you are subjected to the rule.
There are some basis for the 2year home residency. Not everyone is subjected.

Since you are a Green Card holder and not a USC, the answer is yes. You may lose your GC if you make this trip.
