Aug 21, 2020OUTCOME: A national wide injunction was issued against the order, and upheld by the circuit court. The executive order was withdrawn by the new administration in 2021.
U.S. WeChat Users Alliance vs. Trump was filed in the Federal District Court of Northern California. The case defended our freedom of speech against one of the Trump’s executive orders banning a social ... media App called WeChat. I’m a trustee of the plaintiff. It was the first time that the government’s power overreached to the social media. The order could caused an App of social media being permanently disable in the country. If WeChat did turn out to be banned by an executive order, so could other social media have been eliminated by the government. Only banning WeChat was not the final purpose of the government, but controlling Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Telemundo, KakaoTalk, etc. could be their further steps. The notable constitutional law scholar Erwin Chemerinsky is one of the experts for plaintiffs. ACLU and Electric Frontier Foundation provided great supports filing amicus briefs for plaintiffs as well.
