Discharged Taxes
Oct 01, 2015OUTCOME: $208k Tax Debt Discharged
A client contacted me to discuss a $208,000 tax debt that was haunting him after a bankruptcy filing. He had been told that his Chapter 7 bankruptcy would have discharged (forgiven) the tax debt, but t ... he IRS started sending him collection letters for the debt and that specific tax year. We obtained the account transcript and identified that the tax year should have been discharged the bankruptcy. Given this, I contacted the IRS bankruptcy division and discussed the matter with the IRS agent. They claimed that the tax return had not been filed for that tax year. I identified that it had and pointed to the date, transaction code, and specific note on the account transcript. The IRS reviewed the transcript once more and then notified us that the taxes would be discharged as there was an error on their part.
