Sagle man accused of accidentally killing a resident crossing Fifth Avenue opened Wednesday with clashing assertions over who was at fault for the first pedestrian fatality in Sandpoint in 10 years. ... Mark Eugene Carter was fatally injured on Christmas Eve 2006 when he was struck in the Poplar Street crosswalk by Newman Asa Samples, who was headed northbound in a Ford Explorer. Carter died the following day and Samples was charged with vehicular manslaughter. After a 2 day jury trial Mr. Samples was found "not guilty." Charges dismissed.
