The shooting of Walter Scott occurred on April 4, 2015, in North Charleston, South Carolina, following a daytime traffic stop for an allegedly non-functioning brake light. Scott was fatally shot by Mic ... hael Slager, a North Charleston police officer. Slager was charged with murder after a video surfaced contradicting his initial police report as well as initial accounts of the shooting from the City of North Charleston, North Charleston Police a Department, and Slager's attorney. The video showed him shooting the unarmed Scott from behind while Scott was fleeing, the first of eight consecutive shots occurring at a distance of approximately 15-20ft. The case was independently investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Attorney in South Carolina, and the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division are conducting their own investigations. On June 8, a grand jury indicted Slager on a charge of murder. The case garnered extensive local, national, and international media coverage. Prior to a federal civil rights violation and wrongful death lawsuit being filed, the family reached a historic $6.5 million settlement with the City of North Charleston.
