This was a medical malpractice claim against the only hospital in Carroll County. My client was an 84 year old woman with a history of prior heart problems. A night nurse failed to report complaints ... of chest pain to the treating physician. My client ended up having a massive heart attack that left her severely impaired. I served as lead trial counsel on the case. I obtained a unanimous decision awarding my client $350,000.00, which is believed to be the largest verdict in the history of Carroll County.

OUTCOME: The judge determined that the bar was liable for the negligence and ordered it to pay $3,750,000.

The plaintiff was a patron at a local bar. He attempted to re-enter the bar with a lit cigarette when an employee prevented him from coming back into the bar. Plaintiff fell backwards and struck his he ... ad causing severe injuries. He was transported to St. Luke's hospital where he underwent numerous procedures over seven days, incurring $118,532.75 in medical bills. At the judge tried case, plaintiff presented expert testimony from Patrick Quinn, security expert, about the proper manner to prevent such injuries. He discussed a written security training manual, pre-work training and proper supervision. Nurse Sheryl Bunce, a certified life care planner, offered expert testimony that the plaintiff will need future medical care in the amount of $578,666.00.
