They took the same crosswalk that they took 100's of times before. Unfortunately, for them, Jason Coker was getting off a long shift. He was tired and driving at a high rate of speed. As he approached the crosswalk Maria and Sarita had already entered and gone 20 feet putting them directly in Mr. Coker's lane. Mr. Coker did not slow down. Right before impact, Maria Castillo bravely put her body in front of Mr. Coker's vehicle to protect young Sarita, saving Sarita's life. An air ambulance took Sarita to a local hospital where emergency physicians removed Sarita's spleen. A verdict of $283,834.00 was awarded at trial.
