After leaving my first job, I started my own practice. My first case was a divorce. The client told me his wife had been an inpatient at a local mental health facility for many years, but he never di ... vorced her because he thought if you were separated for seven years, you were automatically divorced. Not so. I began the work of having a guardian appointed to represent her in the divorce action and had to call my client. Few mobile phones back then and he didn't have one. Or a home phone. So I had to call his sister to leave a message. His sister and I realized at the same moment that we were not talking about the same wife. Turns out he had re-married, telling everyone that he divorced his first wife long ago. Since he hadn't, everything got real messy real quick. Maybe he should have told me everything?
