The client was charged with drug trafficking after he was arrested with another individual on a fishing vessel, which contained 740 pounds of marijuana. The Client was facing a minimum of 5 years priso ... n and maximum of 40 years prison. The client’s co-defendant was on was given 8 years prison. I conducted focus groups for free utilizing criminal justice students and assisting living communities and I video taped these focus groups. I then created a 15-minute documentary composing of the comments of the focus group members that were favorable to my client being not convicted at trial. Despite a confession by the client, I was able negotiate what amounted to a time served sentence of 16 months prison.

The client was on of only 78 individuals to ever be prosecuted in the United States under the Foreign Narcotics ... Kingpin Designation Act (the "Kingpin Act") (21 U.S.C. 1901-1908, 8 U.S.C. 1182). The Kingpin Act requires that the Secretary of the Treasury, the Attorney General, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, and the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency coordinate to identify drug kingpins and propose them to the President for sanctions. The Act calls for the President to report to specified congressional committees by June 1 of each year on those "foreign persons [he] determines are appropriate for sanctions". In other words every year the President releases a list of the biggest drug traffickers in the world who import to the United States and then the Justice Department pursues these individuals wherever they may be in the world and seeks to have them extradited to the United States. President George W. Bush sent lead counsel a letter asking lead counsel to not take the case.
