Beginning in January 2011, new standards the Tennessee POST Commission promulgated led to prolonged detention and harassment of perceived non-citizens -- predominantly Latinos - in local jails across T ... ennessee. Arrests increased, and correctional officers increasingly played the role of immigration gumshoe. Something had to be done. With Bill Geissler, the legal team I worked with discovered violations of Tennessee's Open Meetings laws by the POST Commission when developing the immigration-checks standard. Using the pressure from those violations, Mr. Geissler successfully prompted the POST Commission to abandon its immigration-check policy altogether, resolving the dispute.
