38 YO – Has gastric sleeve surgery. 1st month post-op went well, at about 4 weeks he started feeling sick. Couldn’t keep food down. 3 or 4 days prior to follow up with surgeon, he started feeling r ... eally sick and vision began changing. Someone had noticed that he was walking awkwardly. During his 2nd visit to surgeon, he explained him he was nauseous, vomiting, and hobbling. Surgeon directed him to drink more water and to take an antihistamine for his post nasal drip. 5 Days later he was seen at the ER. ER gave him fluids and sent him home. Next day he went to the ER again, couldn’t walk. He was given fluids and valium then sent home. 2 days later he was admitted. Took 7 days to discover that he was suffering from a vitamin B deficiency. Surgeon told him that he was kicking himself, because they should have checked his thiamine, as this is something that occurs. He was diagnosed with Wernicke’s Syndrome. Permanently disabled.
