The Mississippi ... Ethics Commission ruled that Grisham's stepson was considered his relative under Mississippi law, their longstanding rule. However, Based upon Mr. Akins' arguments, the Circuit Court and Mississippi Supreme Court disagreed finding that relatives were defined as "parent, child or spouse" and did not include step-children.

Leatherwood fell out of the back of a Frito-Lay delivery truck and hurt his back. Frito-Lay denied the claim and Mr. Akins sued on Leatherwood's behalf. Initially, the Administrative Judge denied the ... claim, but on appeal, the Mississippi Workers Compensation Commission awarded benefits. The Mississippi Court of Appeals upheld the award.
