Sheryl T. Hurst, founding member of Hurst Immigration, PLLC, comes from a family of immigrants herself, having resided in Memphis, TN for almost 20 years, she now considers Memphis, TN her home. Ms. Hurst has a BA in International Relations and Political Science from the University of Memphis and Juris Doctorate from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Ms. Hurst also holds a Certificate in Inter-American Legal Studies from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, and a Certificate in Comparative Development from the Pontifical University of Salmanca in Salmanca, Spain. She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Mid-South Chapter, Memphis Bar Association (MBA), American Bar Association (ABA), and Federal Bar Association (FBA), Immigration Law Section.Prior to establishing the firm, Ms. Hurst was a co-founder of Jackson & Hurst,LLC law firm where she also primarily practiced Immigration law. Ms. Hurst has previously worked with the Memphis Community Legal Center in their Immigrant Justice program. There she was a legal advocate for low-income clients in Immigration court and before USCIS. Ms. Hurst represents individual clients in all areas of U.S. immigration law. Ms. Hurst resided in Honduras for over four (4) years and has had first hand experience in the plight of immigrants fleeing from natural disaster, economic turmoil, and persecution.
In December 2014, the federal government opened the largest immigrant family detention center, the South Texas Family Residential Center (STFRC) in Dilley, Texas. With virtually no one on the ground to provide assistance and representation to these families, the CARA Pro Bono Project operates a pro bono model of legal services that directly represents the mothers and children detained at the South Texas Family Residential Center. In 2015 Ms. Hurst traveled to Dilley, Texas to participate with the CARA project, providing Pro Bono representation to detained families. She is an avid traveller and interested in the economic, social, and humanitarian factors that motivate immigrants to migrate from their homes. Her primary areas of interest include asylum, U-visa’s, crimmigration, and immigration relief for children and victims of domestic violence.
