Bad Timing, Bad Temper, Defensive

I agree with the other reviewer that Hagen yells if you question him and becomes defensive. I asked for his services around the holidays. He and Bren started out very friendly and reassuring. Because I was not in the same town they had to send me contracts to sign through the mail. They could ha...ve done it other ways, but I had no internet access, and snail mail was Hagan’s choice. I volunteered to go to the office store to use faxes or scanners if they preferred, which Bren said would be fine, but she told me she’d do it by mail since Hagan said it would be fine that way. The first contract was supposed to be sent before they left for the Holidays, but the actually date that was stamped and the date the documents were written was about a week later. Then the documents took 2 MORE weeks to arrive. Bren said it was the post office’s fault, but I worked in an office that stamped their own mail, and letters can sit in an office after being stamped, so the papers could have not made it out of the office. When I asked what happened, Bren first said everything went out exactly when she said it would. But when I brought up the date stamped, she changed her story about when the papers went out, but still denied they sat in the office. I don’t know why it took 3 weeks, but she was very defensive and insisted it was not possible for anyone to leave them in the office. However, it is possible. Then, all of it got blamed on me. She said that I’d made it so difficult by not knowing how I wanted it sent! Since I agreed to do it any way that they wanted, I came to the conclusion that she was just not being honest to protect herself, but blaming a client is a low blow. Meanwhile, I’d immediately on the very first day gone to my bank and transferred $3000 to them. So they had my money and I had no contract. After Christmas, Bren called. I thought she had me confused with someone else. She said she thought I wasn’t sure I wanted to do the separation/divorce. I said that I’d sent the money and was waiting on their contract. I was confused by her statement as I never said I wasn’t sure. I did ask for advice on whether to do a separation or divorce, but was clear I wanted one of those. I called right before New Years for an update or plan from Hagan as I hadn’t heard from him or what would happen next. He couldn’t remember my case well and had me confused with others. He said he was traveling and didn’t have my file. That was fine with me as I assumed he had a lot of clients. When I asked if he had a lot of clients, he sounded defensive and upset and insisted that he didn’t. I think he thought I was suggesting it was a bad thing to have a lot of clients. I thought it was good because it would explain why he confused my case. When I asked his advise about separation vs divorce, he became impatient with me and said I shouldn’t “what if” and just get a divorce because that’s what my husband wanted, and he needed to file it right away, and i could worry about not having insurance later. It seemed that once Hagan had his money, he stopped being reassuring and friendly and became in a hurry and impatient, but maybe it was just holiday frustrations. But then he didn’t file for the divorce and my husband beat him to it. I said I’d like to part ways and he agreed. I asked for itemized bill and refund of unused monies. Guess what! Three weeks later, and after 3 or 4 calls to Bren, I still had neither and found out they’d used up about $2800. I contested if that was possible. I then received an itemized statement and the amount used changed to about $2100, and Hagan wrote that he decided to get rid of me 3weeks AFTER he and I agreed to part ways, and he listed communication problems and I was rude to Bren. I think they changed the date so they didn’t need to explain why it took them almost a month for a refund. I WAS rude in the end to get Bren to act and Hagan to withdraw so I could legally replace him.

We have gone through our client files and cannot possibly figure out who this might be. If this is a past client I would ask that they reach out to me directly to discuss their case. I will certainly try to do everything that can be done in accordance with the law to fight for my clients and their children when I am retained to do so. Please see my other 5 star reviews in family matters.”

Not the right temperament for family law

As with the other reviews, Bill Hagan has a very hot temper and was very easily angered when questioned. He was pleasant until we paid his retainer, then he quickly became very slow to respond to calls/emails and was overtly aggressive if I disagreed or even wanted further explanation about how he wa...s handling my case. During my family law matter, his bad temper added extra stress to an already stressful situation. I’m happy we went separate ways before going to trial, I don’t imagine a hot temper and a pushy demeanor would have well received by opposing counsel or a judge.
