Originally from Lawrenceburg, Kate Boston Melby is a third generation trial attorney from Middle Tennessee. Kate graduated with honors from Auburn University and the University of Tennessee College of Law. She earned her J.D. with a concentration in Advocacy and Conflict Resolution. While at UT, Kate made the Dean's List, received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award, was named "Best Advocate" of her Trial Practice class, completed over 200 hours of Pro Bono hours, and completed the nationally recognized Legal Advocacy Clinic. She also completed a study abroad program at the University of Cambridge.
Kate’s legal career began at the Public Defender's Office for the 22nd Judicial District. She joined the office of the District Attorney General for Davidson County in 2014. During her six years with the DA’s office, she served as a member of the General Sessions team, Domestic Violence Division, and prosecuted violent crimes in Davidson County Criminal Court. Kate’s work as an assistant district attorney included the successful prosecution of some of Nashville’s high profile murders.
She was a proud member of the State's first Conviction Review Unit that worked to exonerate individuals wrongfully convicted. In addition to enforcing the laws of Tennessee, Kate worked to draft and pass the Elderly and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act--House Bill 810/ Senate Bill 1230, as well as House Bill 1666 amending the Harassment statute to include modern technology.
