Cajun Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. was an electric utility that served over 1 million customers in the state of Louisiana. Cajun Electric filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition in 1995. Shortly t ... hereafter, Ralph R. Mabey was appointed by the court as its Chapter 11 trustee. I served as the lead litigation attorney for the Trustee in connection with the confirmation hearing on three competing plans of reorganization. The confirmation hearing, which began in December 1996 and was concluded in June 1999, lasted 63 days and was, as far as I can tell, the longest confirmation hearing in the history of American bankruptcy law. The Trustee's plan of reorganization was confirmed and resulted in the sale of Cajun Electric's assets for over $1 billion.
