A native of Gadsden, H. Dean Buttram Jr. earned his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Ala. in 1978. During law school, he was awarded the American Jurisprudence “Book Awards” for his achievements in Equity Law and Criminal Law. He entered private practice in 1978 after being admitted to the Alabama Bar.
In 1998, Mr. Buttram was nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve as a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama. His nomination received the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate, and Mr. Buttram served in this prestigious position until June 30, 2002, when he returned to private practice in Centre.
He has served as the attorney for the Cherokee County Commission since 1980 and is local counsel for Alabama Power.
Mr. Buttram has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Centre, Alabama, for 50 years. He has served as Finance Chairman for the past five years. An animal lover and owner of horses, dogs and cats, Mr. Buttram is Vice President of the Cherokee Humane Society, Inc.
