Jo Ann Marie Koontz

I'm a Florida attorney and Certified Public Accountant and the founder of Koontz & Associates, P.L. I started my Sarasota firm in 2011 so clients could get legal and tax advice in one relationship. I've been a licensed CPA since 2003 and a member of The Florida Bar since 2006. I'm also admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court.

My work covers real estate closings, business formation and ownership structure, and business sales for U.S. and foreign clients. I also handle Florida residency planning for people moving from high-tax states. I serve clients in Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Venice and Wellen Park, and on the barrier islands from Anna Maria Island to Manasota Key.

I've written for Florida Realtor magazine and am a frequent source for its writers, most recently in 2026. I also appear in the Florida Realtors "Take 5" video series, where I explain how real estate professionals can structure their businesses for legal protection and tax efficiency. I'm a past president of the American Academy of Attorney-CPAs and vice president of the Florida Academy of Attorney-CPAs, and I was named to the Business Observer's 40 Under 40 in 2018. I teach state-approved continuing education courses for Realtors in Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and have spoken at the NAR Annual Convention and the Florida Realtors Convention & Trade Expo, most recently in 2024. I also hosted the radio show It's Your Business.

In my experience, the issue that brings a client through the door is often not the most important one. My job is to find it and explain it in plain English.
