Georgia Courts often appoint a Guardian Ad Litem (or “GAL”) in contentious domestic disputes. The GAL acts as an independent advocate for individuals, such as minors, who may be unable to adequately re ... present their best interests. Because of their role in contentious disputes, GALs are often on the receiving end of lawsuits, many of which stem from the emotions of the domestic dispute, rather than a professional error by the GAL. Recognizing the need to protect GALs from frivolous lawsuits, the Georgia Legislature enacted a privilege specifically for GALs. In this case, we filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit based on this and other privileges. The Court granted our motion.
