For more than 25 years, Rocky Brancato has defended clients facing criminal charges at every level in Florida — from first-offense DUI and misdemeanors to murder, sex crimes, and cases where freedom and life hang in the balance. As Managing Partner of The Brancato Law Firm, P.A., he leads a trial-first practice where experience, preparation, and courtroom skill determine outcomes.
Rocky holds the AV Preeminent® rating from Martindale-Hubbell® (2015–Present)—the highest rating for legal skill and ethical standards. Moreover, he maintains death-qualified status, meaning he meets the rigorous standards required to defend capital cases where the State seeks the death penalty.
Before entering private practice, Rocky served as Chief Assistant Public Defender (Chief Operations Officer) for the Hillsborough County Public Defender’s Office—one of Florida’s largest defense agencies, with more than 100 attorneys and over 200 staff members.
In that executive role, he oversaw felony and major crimes divisions, mentored senior trial lawyers, and collaborated at the highest levels of the criminal justice system on policy and problem-solving court initiatives. However, even as an executive leader, Rocky continued maintaining an active caseload of homicide and sex-crime trials. As a result, his leadership remained grounded in real-world trial experience rather than administrative distance.
This rare blend of executive oversight and frontline advocacy gives him unmatched insight into prosecutorial strategy, evidence development, and jury dynamics. Furthermore, unlike many former prosecutors who later turn to defense work, Rocky’s entire career has focused on protecting the accused. Consequently, he brings a defense-first perspective that former prosecutors simply cannot offer.
Rocky also served as a police academy instructor, training officers on criminal procedure and courtroom testimony. This experience gives him direct insight into what officers are taught about constitutional requirements, how they’re coached to testify, and how to present themselves credibly on the stand. When cross-examining law enforcement witnesses, Rocky doesn’t guess what training they received—he delivered it.

5 Stars and Above Lawyer in Tampa and surrounding areas
Attorney Brancato was phenomenal. If I could give him more than 5 stars I would. Very professional, polite, and just overall AMAZING. The only one that actually took the time to help me with a specific case I had for the past few years. I can’t begin to thank him enough.
Thank you, Keelie, for your review. It was our pleasure to lift this weight off of your back and help give you some peace. I am so happy you found our blog article that led you to our firm. I am even happier that we were able to serve you by getting your case completely dismissed!
"As a former assistant public defender and lawyer with years in private practice, I’ve worked alongside some of the best criminal defense lawyers in the Tampa Bay area. Rocky, a mentor of mine, will always stand out to me as one of the most talented, experienced, and ethical attorneys in the field. His results are unquestionably impressive. He was a tremendous teacher for me personally. Rocky's dedication to his clients, extensive legal knowledge, and unwavering commitment to justice put him amongst the elite criminal defense lawyers in the Tampa Bay area - if not the entire state. If you need strong, strategic representation, I highly recommend Rocky Brancato and his firm. I would not hesitate to trust him with representing my closest friends or family and nor should you."
